On his initial day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” New York City, promising “a different age” and an bold commencement to his tenure.

An Unprecedented Mayor

The young figure, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this is rare and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose grasp the levers of change,” Mamdani added.

Ignoring suggestions to lower expectations, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will govern boldly and broadly.”

Adhering to Democratic Socialist Principles

Mamdani openly embraced his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my convictions for worry of being called extreme,” he said to loud cheers.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over powerful interests.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a agenda featuring:

• Universal childcare
• Free buses
• A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these initiatives may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the richest residents and corporations. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Headwinds

The new mayor also faces skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has moved to ease these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.

The Basic Challenges of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in delivering basic services: trash collection, curbing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and ensuring smooth subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
